What is a session? A session is series of classes.
Sessions are 4 weeks long (4 consecutive weeks) .
What is the class format? We start with 10 minute warm-up
followed by 20 minutes of technique introduction/review
followed by 20 minutes of combinations/choreography introduction/review
followed by 10 minute cool-down.
What can I expect to learn? We cover technique that is then used in combinations and/or a short choreography.
We do this to give the student a sense of the music and how the moves can express that music.
Who is your typical student? The short answer is - a woman.
The longer answer is - we have all shapes, sizes, ages, fitness levels, dance experience levels in the class.
We encourage those who want to try bellydance to come out and play.
We embrace and celebrate all versions of bodies.
Our focus is on bringing out the beautiful woman who is inside each and every one of us in a fun and female friendly way.
What fitness level is expected? Bellydance is a low-impact aerobics activity.
Please consult your doctor on your fitness level and whether dance can be included in your exercise plan.
Within the class, we can offer alternative moves if there is a particular concern or limitation.
Do I need dance experience for the beginner's class? No - the class is geared towards those who do not have any dance experience.
Those who have studied other dance forms or who have taken bellydance classes before will benefit from the review of foundational moves.
Do I have to perform? No
Our beginner's class is about having fun and learning foundational bellydance moves.
There are opportunities that come up where students are invited to perform and we encourage those who wish to include this in their personal growth to participate.
We respect the student's decision on whether she wants to participate.
What do I wear? Clothes that are easy to move in. This includes yoga pants, unitards, leotard and a skirt, harem pants, shorts and a t-shirt.
If you have a hip scarf, please bring it along. We do have practice scarves we loan to students in class, so don't worry if you don't have one.
Jeans or tight-fitting pants are not ideal as they restrict movement.
What footwear do I wear? A flexible sole footwear - this includes ballet shoes, tennis shoes with a flexible sole, socks.
You may choose to dance barefoot, however some of the studio spaces see a lot of traffic throughout the week so you may need to wash your feet after class.
Running shoes are not ideal as they restrict movement.
